Philipp Scheidemann was a prominent politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and a central figure in the transition from the German Empire to the Weimar Republic. Known for his rhetorical skill and pragmatic approach, he rose to national prominence as a parliamentary leader and editor, with close ties to journalism and the political mobilization of the labor movement. During the German Revolution of 1918–1919, Scheidemann became symbolic when he proclaimed the German Republic from the Reichstag, an act that placed him at the center of the events that created the Weimar Republic. In 1919 he was elected Minister-President by the National Assembly convened in Weimar to draft the new constitution, a post he resigned the same year over disagreements about accepting the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Throughout the 1920s he retained institutional importance: he served as mayor of Kassel (1920–1925) and remained a member of the Reichstag until 1933. With the rise of the Nazis he went into exile, identified as one of the political figures responsible for the end of the Empire. In exile he devoted himself to writing about German politics, leaving a legacy as one of the protagonists of democratization and of the early tensions of the Weimar Republic.
