Philippe Petit is a French high-wire artist whose career became known for unauthorized crossings at iconic sites. Self-taught on the streets rather than in the traditional circus circuit, he developed his own repertoire that emphasized the poetic and performative aspects of walking on a wire. He rose to prominence in 1971 when he crossed the two spires of Notre-Dame Cathedral, and broadened his reputation with a walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1973. The episode that cemented his fame took place on August 7, 1974, when Petit walked along a wire stretched between the rooftops of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, more than 400 meters above the ground. The act, the result of six years of logistical and technical planning, combined risk, ingenuity and theatricality, drawing extensive press coverage and public reaction. After the crossing he agreed to give a benefit performance and avoided formal prosecution. He lived in New York for much of his life, where he carried out other performative works and taught workshops, and collaborated on books and films that revisited his feat. His career influenced contemporary perceptions of high-wire performance as an art form and placed the subversive and imaginative character of the practice at the center of discussions about public art and spectacle.
