Philippe Pozzo di Borgo was a French businessman known for his long career in the champagne industry, having led the house of Pommery. Born into a Corsican noble family, he became widely known after a severe paragliding accident in 1993 left him quadriplegic. His personal experience of recovery and reinvention guided his later work as an author and public figure.
His book Le Second Souffle (2001) recounts the ordeal of the fall, the loss of mobility and the decisive role of his caregiver, Abdel Yasmin Sellou, in his return to life. That intimate story inspired the film Intouchables (2011), a worldwide success that broadened Pozzo di Borgo’s recognition and prompted international remakes. The reissued book and subsequent works established his voice on vulnerability, dependency and dignity.
Over the years he engaged in causes related to people with disabilities and was a patron of organizations such as Wheeling Around the World and UP for Humanness, as well as speaking in debates on end-of-life issues. He was awarded the rank of Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur and remained publicly active into his later years, living between France and Morocco.
