Pierre Gassendi was a French philosopher, Catholic priest, astronomer and mathematician whose work marked the shift from scholastic thought to modern scientific philosophy. He led an intellectual circle in Paris and, with notable creativity, reconciled Epicurean atomism with Christian theology, defending a moderate empiricism and a critical stance toward both Aristotelianism and Cartesianism. As an observational scientist he published pioneering observations — he was the first to record the transit of Mercury in 1631, used a camera obscura to measure the Moon’s apparent diameter, and carried out experiments on free fall, the speed of sound and atmospheric phenomena that anticipated later experimental methods. He also worked on determining longitude by eclipses and on improving astronomical tables. His output includes the Syntagma philosophicum and commentaries on Epicurus, Aristotle and Descartes; in these works he set out a logic and a physics inspired by Epicurus but adapted to belief in a provident God and an immortal soul. He earned praise from contemporaries and left a lasting influence on the history of science and natural philosophy.
