Pim Fortuyn was a Dutch politician, author, columnist and university professor who rose to prominence for his charismatic persona and combative style in public debate. Trained in History, Law and Economics, and holding a doctorate in Sociology, he taught at universities such as Groningen and Erasmus University Rotterdam before entering active politics. Known for outspoken positions on immigration, freedom of expression and criticism of Islam, Fortuyn became a polarizing figure: he was openly gay and rejected labels of the far right, arguing that he defended cultural values and emancipation. In 2002 he founded the Lijst Pim Fortuyn (LPF) after a break with Leefbaar Nederland, gaining substantial support in polls on the eve of the election. His assassination on 6 May 2002, nine days before the election, shocked the Netherlands and interrupted a political rise that had already shaped public debate on integration and national identity. Fortuyn’s legacy remains divisive: for some he was a reformer who brought sensitive issues to the agenda; for others, a symbol of social and cultural polarization.
