Porfirio Díaz (José de la Cruz Porfirio Díaz Mori) was a Mexican military officer and statesman who dominated the country’s politics during the period known as the Porfiriato, more than three decades characterized by authoritarian stability and economic modernization. A veteran of the Reform War and the resistance against the French intervention, he distinguished himself militarily in battles such as Puebla, rose to the rank of general, and established himself as a political leader from 1876 onward. His government promoted foreign investment and large infrastructure projects — railways, ports and communications — under the guidance of technocrats known as the “científicos,” which accelerated Mexico’s economic integration into the global market. At the same time, reforms and administrative practices concentrated land and income, worsening rural and urban inequalities. The policy of “Paz porfiriana” combined order and repression: material progress and stability for some, with systematic repression of opponents and electoral manipulation to retain power. Growing popular alienation, together with social crisis and political suppression, fueled the Mexican Revolution; Díaz resigned in 1911 and died in exile in Paris in 1915. His legacy is ambiguous: he is credited with modernizing the country and attracting investment, yet also criticized for authoritarianism, land concentration and the deep social inequalities that helped trigger the revolutionary uprising.
