Nadezhda of Bulgaria was a princess by birth, the youngest daughter of Tsar Ferdinand I. Initially raised by her paternal grandmother and later by her stepmother, she received a strict education and devoted herself chiefly to charitable work, notably the Eudoxia & Nadezhda orphanage in Sofia and campaigns of the Bulgarian Red Cross. She was described as intelligent, modest, and inclined toward solidarity, maintaining a reserved public profile. In 1924 she married Duke Albrecht Eugen of Württemberg, joining the House of Württemberg and settling in Germany, where she had five children. The family enjoyed periods of calm until the 1930s–40s, when they came under pressure from the Nazi regime because of their political stance and dynastic ties. During and after World War II she kept in contact with and provided financial support to relatives of the exiled Bulgarian royal family. Widowed in 1954, she died in Stuttgart in 1958. Her name remains associated with an area of the Bulgarian capital, which was possibly named in her honor.
