Louise of Denmark and Norway (1750–1831) was a princess by birth and became Countess of Hesse‑Cassel by marriage; she belonged to the Danish royal house as a daughter of King Frederick V. In 1766 she married Count Charles of Hesse‑Cassel, a union that prompted reservations at court because of her husband's controversial reputation, but that came to be politically consolidated over the following decades. The couple lived in several aristocratic residences — including Hanau, Gottorp Castle and the Louisenlund estate, established by Charles with income from Norway — and had several children, among them Maria Sophia, who later became Queen of Denmark. Louise's husband held high offices: governor of Schleswig‑Holstein and of Norway, and field marshal, which kept the family within influential political circles. Within the Danish political context at the end of the eighteenth century, Louise's life reflects the dynamics of dynastic alliances and regional influence. She died at Gottorp Castle in 1831 and was buried in Schleswig Cathedral, leaving descendants who continued ties with the royal houses of northern Europe.
