Margrethe of Denmark was a Danish princess by birth and became Princess of Parma when she married Prince René of Parma. The youngest granddaughter of King Christian IX, she belonged to a generation that reinforced dynastic ties across Europe and was raised within the milieu of early twentieth‑century European courts. The only daughter of Prince Valdemar and Maria of Orléans, she was the sole sibling brought up in the Catholic faith by her mother's decision, agreed with her husband and the Holy See for the children’s religious education. Her dynastic rank placed her among candidates for high‑standing alliances; she was at one point considered an ideal match for Archduke Charles of Austria, a union that did not materialize. Married to René of Parma, she had four children and spent much of her life in France, where the family lived relatively modestly. During the Second World War she fled the Nazi occupation with her family—traveling via Spain, Portugal and the United States—and supported the household in New York through modest work. After the conflict they returned to Paris; Margrethe died in 1992 and was buried in the royal necropolis at Roskilde Cathedral, remaining the last living grandchild of Christian IX and a figure tied to the complex web of European dynastic relations of her era.
