Princesa da Dinamarca Sophie Hedevig

Photo: Reproduction

Sophie Hedevig of Denmark was a princess, daughter of King Christian V and Queen Charlotte-Amélie of Hesse-Cassel. Known for several failed marriage negotiations — including proposals with the Elector of Saxony and the future Emperor Joseph I — she refused to convert to Catholicism, a stance that shaped her political and personal life and left her officially unmarried, despite rumors of a secret marriage to the noble Carl Adolph von Plessen. After her parents’ deaths she lived at court under the protection of her brother, King Frederick IV, and later moved to Vemmetofte in protest at the royal marriage to Anna Sophie of Reventlow. There, together with her brother Charles and von Plessen, she established a household with significant courtly trappings and promoted social initiatives, such as founding schools for peasants on the estates they managed. Sophie Hedevig was a patron of the arts and practised portrait painting, music and crafts such as ivory carving and embroidery; several of her works are part of the royal collections. In her will she founded the Vemmetofte convent for unmarried noblewomen, an institutional legacy that underscores her social and cultural influence in eighteenth-century Denmark.
