Henriette Anne (Anne Henriette) was a French princess, daughter of Louis XV and Maria Leszczyńska, born in Versailles in 1727. A twin of Louise Élisabeth, Duchess of Parma, she was raised at the court of Versailles and became known for her beauty, reserve, and musical talent. She was considered the king’s favorite daughter and enjoyed a harmonious reputation with her siblings, without notable enmities. Although the subject of marital proposals and interests, no serious union took place: records mention suggested matches such as the Prince of Conti and a mutual affection with Louis Philippe, Duke of Orléans, but the king ultimately vetoed alliances that would bring the Orléans too close to the throne. Henriette discreetly supported her twin sister’s political ambitions, serving chiefly as a family ally. She died of smallpox in 1752, at the age of 24. The loss was deeply felt by Louis XV, who ordered elevated funeral honors; her heart was buried at Val‑de‑Grâce and her remains at the Basilica of Saint‑Denis. Posterity remembers her as a figure of delicacy and affectionate influence within the king’s closest circle.
