Princess of Prussia Victoria Isabel Augusta Charlotte (1860–1919) was a member of the House of Hohenzollern and, by marriage, duchess consort of Saxe‑Meiningen from 1914 to 1918. The eldest granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, she grew up amid high European politics, shaped by her mother’s strict upbringing and her father’s military career. From youth she was noted for frail health and a nervous temperament, traits that remained with her throughout her life. In 1878 she married Prince Bernhard of Saxe‑Meiningen; although the union secured dynastic alliances, it proved difficult in daily life. Charlotte maintained an active social life in Berlin and a reputation for eccentric behavior. She had a strained relationship with her daughter, Princess Feodora, and was often the subject of rumors and controversies at court. With her brother William II’s accession to the throne her social standing became more prominent but also attracted criticism. Germany’s defeat in the First World War brought about the overthrow of ruling houses; her husband lost the duchy in 1918, and Charlotte died shortly thereafter in 1919. Historians have suggested she suffered from porphyria, a hypothesis put forward to explain her long‑term ill health and symptoms.
