Maria Anna of Anhalt‑Dessau (1837–1906) was a princess of the House of Ascania, born into the ducal family of Anhalt as the third daughter of Duke Leopold IV and Princess Frederica Wilhelmina of Prussia. By blood she belonged to the dynastic network that linked the German principalities to the Prussian royal house, a connection that shaped her social position in the nineteenth century. On 29 November 1854 she married her second cousin, Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia, with whom she had five children, including daughters who married into European royal houses — a network of unions that reinforced dynastic alliances between Anhalt, Prussia, the United Kingdom and other states. Her marriage and offspring illustrate the traditional role of princesses in the dynastic politics of the period. A widow from 1885, she withdrew from Berlin and spent long periods in Italy, in cities such as Naples, Rome and Florence. At the time there were rumors of a possible morganatic marriage to one of her squires, although this is not firmly documented. She died on 12 May 1906 in Friedrichroda. Her legacy survives chiefly in the marital connections that maintained her house’s influence in European courts at the end of the nineteenth century.
