Maria Carolina of Austria (1752–1814) was an Archduchess of Austria and, by marriage, queen consort of Naples and Sicily. A daughter of Francis I and Empress Maria Theresa, she took an active political role during the reign of her husband, Ferdinand IV & III, becoming de facto ruler and an influential member of the Council of State from the birth of the heir in 1775.
An early promoter of reforms often seen as inspired by the Enlightenment, Maria Carolina intervened in administration, reversed bans such as that on Freemasonry, and worked to reduce Spanish influence while strengthening the navy with the support of her protégé John Acton. At the same time she fostered the arts and sciences, helping to make Naples a cultural center that attracted painters and intellectuals.
The French Revolution and the Napoleonic invasions altered her course: she made the kingdom more police‑oriented to contain liberal ideas, aligned with Great Britain and Austria, and endured two depositions that forced her into exile, first in Sicily and later in Vienna, where she died in 1814. Her legacy combines administrative and cultural reforms with a conservative response to the European upheavals of her time.
