Marie Alexandrine Sophie Augusta Helena of Saxe‑Weimar‑Eisenach (1849–1922) was a German princess, daughter of Grand Duke Charles Alexander of Saxe‑Weimar‑Eisenach and Princess Sophie of the Netherlands. Placed within European dynastic networks, she occupied for a time a notable position in the Dutch line of succession and was regarded as a potential heir to the throne under certain circumstances until the birth of Princess Juliana in 1909. Trained in the arts, Marie studied painting and left a record of her work in a portrait of the professor August Allebé in 1886, indicating continued artistic activity even after marriage. In 1876 she married Heinrich VII, Prince Reuss of Köstritz, with whom she had several children, among them Heinrich XXXII and Heinrich XXXIII, who maintained ties with German royal houses. Her place in the succession prompted international speculation about possible political influence, particularly during moments of dynastic uncertainty in the Netherlands, but this dissipated with the birth of direct heirs to Queen Wilhelmina. Marie died in 1922 in Trebschen, leaving a legacy connected both to courtly and dynastic life and to artistic practice.
