Princess Marie Louise of Schleswig-Holstein was a member of the British royal family and a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Born into the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg family, she spent most of her life in the United Kingdom and held the style of Her Highness by royal grant. In 1891 she married Prince Aribert of Anhalt; the marriage was annulled in 1900 and, according to her memoirs, she always upheld her marital vows and did not remarry.
After the annulment she devoted herself to philanthropic work and the patronage of the arts. She played a significant role in social initiatives, such as the founding of the Girl’s Club in Bermondsey — which served as a hospital during the First World War — and she supported nursing institutions connected to the royal family. She also inspired and collaborated on craft projects such as Queen Mary’s famous Dolls’ House.
She remained present at the British monarchy’s official ceremonies for several decades, attending four coronations as well as funerals and state events. The author of memoirs published in 1956, she left a legacy of public service and of representing the generation of Victoria’s grandchildren, dying in London that same year.
