Leopoldina of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, known as the Princess of Brazil, was a member of the Brazilian imperial family and the second daughter of Emperor Pedro II and Empress Teresa Cristina. Educated under a strict regimen imposed by her father, she received a broad classical and scientific education, reflecting the high standards of preparation expected of princesses for public and dynastic duties in the 19th century. She married in 1864 to Prince Ludwig August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a union that reinforced ties between the Brazilian imperial house and European nobility. Under the marriage contract, the couple were to maintain close ties with Brazil while the succession of the imperial princess Isabel remained unsecured; four children were born of the marriage, the two eldest of whom were legitimated as Brazilian princes and served as presumptive heirs for a time. Leopoldina’s life alternated between stays in Brazil and Europe, accompanying births and fulfilling dynastic obligations. Her early death in Vienna at age 23 cut short the development of the Saxe-Coburg and Braganza branch within the Brazilian imperial context and had familial and succession repercussions at court.
