Caroline Reuss of Greiz was a princess by birth who became Grand Duchess consort of Saxe‑Weimar‑Eisenach when she married William Ernest in 1903. The daughter of Heinrich XXII, Prince Reuss of Greiz, and Ida of Schaumburg‑Lippe, she belonged to a high‑ranking German noble family whose ability to rule was curtailed by the incapacity of her brother. Her marriage to the grand duke was marked by tension: contemporary accounts describe Caroline as ill at ease with the strict etiquette of the Weimar court and embroiled in controversies that culminated in a temporary flight to Switzerland, an episode that caused scandal and public attention. Shortly after returning, her health declined; she died in 1905, officially of pneumonia following influenza, though some sources note suicide as a possibility. Childless, she was the last member of the Saxe‑Weimar family to be buried in the family vault at Weimar. Her brief role as grand duchess was defined by the clash between personal temperament and court protocol, and by a premature death that ended a dynastic link during the era of established monarchies in pre‑republican Germany.
