Prince Alfons of Bavaria was a member of the Wittelsbach royal house and a career officer in the Bavarian army, rising to the rank of General der Kavallerie. Born in Munich to Adalbert of Bavaria and Infanta Amalia of Spain, he began his military career in 1880 and successively held commands in infantry, artillery and, above all, cavalry units. He commanded the 1st Heavy Cavalry Regiment "Prinz Karl von Bayern" and later the 1st Bavarian Cavalry Brigade. In 1891 he married Princess Louise Victoire d’Orléans-Alençon; the marriage produced two children, Joseph Clemens and Elisabeth Maria. Over the course of his career he held honorary positions such as Inhaber of the 7th Chevaulegers Regiment and commander of a Prussian dragoon regiment, and received numerous military orders and decorations. Active within the imperial German armed forces at the turn of the 20th century, Alfons embodied the continuing link between dynastic nobility and military leadership. He died in Munich in 1933 and was interred in the columbarium of St. Michael’s Church, leaving a legacy tied to the Wittelsbachs’ military tradition.
