Prince of Denmark Knud (Knud Christian Frederik Michael) was a member of the royal family and a central figure in the Danish succession in the twentieth century. The second son of Christian X, he became heir presumptive in 1947 when his elder brother acceded to the throne as Frederick IX. His education followed the court’s military tradition, and he carried out representative duties and acted as patron of social and educational institutions. Knud’s prominence is tied to the 1953 constitutional change that introduced cognatic primogeniture and moved him aside in the line of succession in favor of his niece, the future Queen Margrethe II. The change provoked political and family controversy at the time by redefining who could ascend the throne. He married his cousin Caroline-Mathilde in 1933 and had three children, two of whom lost their dynastic titles by marrying without consent. He served as patron of initiatives connected to the South Schleswig community and was honored with a student residence in Copenhagen that bears his name. Knud died in 1976 and was buried in Roskilde Cathedral; his legacy remains associated with debates over succession and the constitutional role of the Danish monarchy.
