Príncipe da Prússia (1862) Heinrich

Prince Heinrich of Prussia was a member of the German imperial house and a career officer in the Imperial Navy. A grandson of Queen Victoria and the younger brother of Emperor Wilhelm II, he built a naval career that culminated in promotion to Grand Admiral. Over the course of his service he commanded several squadrons, held colonial postings and occupied prominent positions such as commander of the High Seas Fleet and of the Baltic Fleet during the First World War.

Noted for a more modest bearing and diplomatic skill in contrast to his brother, Heinrich supported military modernization by championing new technologies — submarines and aviation — and became a qualified pilot in 1910. He also promoted sporting and automotive activities: patron of the Kiel Sailing Club and organizer of the Prinz Heinrich Rally, a forerunner of competitive motor racing in Germany.

After the imperial collapse and the German Revolution he withdrew from military life and settled in Schleswig-Holstein, devoting himself to motor sports, sailing and the training of sailors. He died in 1929, leaving a legacy connected to naval modernization, sporting patronage and popularity among garrisons in northern Germany.
