Carlos, Prince of Asturias, was the heir apparent to the Spanish throne in the 16th century, son of Philip II and Maria Manuel of Portugal. A member of the Habsburg dynasty, his life was marked by physical and mental health problems from childhood, possibly aggravated by the close consanguinity within the royal houses. He received formal education in Alcalá de Henares and assembled a library focused on history, mathematics, and nautical sciences. During his youth, Carlos displayed episodes of violent and unstable behavior, recorded by envoys and court chroniclers. He suffered a severe cranial wound in 1562 that was treated by trepanation performed by Andreas Vesalius, after which his temperament is said to have become even more erratic. These traits led his father to limit his political responsibilities and remove him from positions of command. In his final years the prince became involved in intrigues and contacts with factions in the Low Countries, where opposition to the Spanish monarchy was being discussed, and even showed attempts at violence against figures of the court. He died young, leaving a legacy of conflict between dynastic potential and personal incapacities that influenced political decisions at the court of Philip.
