Diego Félix of Austria was Prince of Asturias and the apparent heir to the thrones of Spain and Portugal during his childhood, as the fourth son of Philip II and the third by Ana of Austria. Formally invested as Prince of Asturias in March 1580 by the courts of Madrid, he briefly represented the continuation of the Habsburg line of succession on the Iberian Peninsula after the death of his elder brother. Raised under courtly attention and expectation, Diego received an education intended to prepare him for the crown: he learned Portuguese, was the subject of public praise, and was surrounded by imagery of a royal future, including a dedication by the poet Cristóbal de Virués. Philip II showed pride and personal involvement in his son's upbringing, even arranging dynastic plans and ceremonial gifts. Diego’s life was cut short by smallpox at the age of seven at the end of 1582. His death worsened the succession crisis at court and prompted the king to public acts of prayer and measures to care for the remaining heirs. The episode marked a sensitive moment in the succession history of the Spanish Habsburgs, who continued through his younger brother, the future Philip III.
