John of Trastámara, Prince of Asturias, was the only surviving son of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. As heir apparent, his birth strengthened Isabella’s dynastic position amid the troubled Castilian succession. Raised in the court, he received a religious and military education that combined theological instruction with training in tournaments, hunting and music; he was noted as a talented musician and singer. His dynastic role prompted political alliances with a European scope: proposed marriages with the royal houses of Brittany, Austria and Burgundy were intended to cement pacts against France. In 1497 he married Margaret of Austria; although the match was political, it proved affectionate. His fragile health prevented these plans from being realized in the long term. Despite his short life, John held a central place in the matrimonial and diplomatic strategies of the Catholic Monarchs and is remembered both for his status as heir and for the political context that marked the end of the fifteenth century on the Iberian Peninsula.
