François d’Orléans, Prince of Joinville, was a 19th-century French naval officer and military author, known for his role in modernizing the French Navy. A son of King Louis-Philippe, he entered the naval service very young and distinguished himself in actions such as the bombardment of San Juan de Ulúa (1838) and operations along the Moroccan coast, which earned him promotions up to the rank of vice-admiral.

He became an influential voice in debates about the future of the French fleet by comparing, in an article, the navies of France and England and advocating adoption of steamships; he was a patron of engineers such as Dupuy de Lôme, a pioneer in screw-propelled ship construction. In 1840 he commanded the expedition that returned Napoleon’s remains from Saint Helena to France, a mission of strong symbolic significance.

Exiled after the 1848 revolution, he spent several years abroad and even offered his services to President Lincoln in the United States; he returned to political life when elected deputy in 1871, retiring in 1875. Author of studies on the navy — including Essais sur la marine française and Études sur la marine — he left a legacy tied to naval modernization and strategic thinking about maritime power.
