Louis II (1870–1949) was Prince of Monaco from 1922 until his death. The son of Albert I, he was raised between Germany and France, received military training at Saint‑Cyr and served in the African colonies before ascending the throne. His personal life was marked by a long relationship with Marie Juliette Louvet and by the filiation of his daughter Charlotte, whose succession status played a role in the dynasty’s continuity. During his reign, Monaco preserved its cultural traditions and saw initiatives that helped define its public identity: AS Monaco Football Club was founded (1924), the first Monaco Grand Prix took place (1929), and in 1931 René Blum established the Ballet of the Opéra de Monte‑Carlo. The stadium later named Stade Prince Louis II was also built. On the eve of and during World War II, Louis sought to maintain neutrality and displayed pro‑French sympathies, aligning with figures of the period. Italian and then German occupation brought persecutions, including the deportation of Jewish citizens; the prince authorized discreet actions by the Monegasque police to warn people at risk. Debates over his wartime conduct caused family tensions, notably with his grandson Rainier. In his final years he divided his time between Monaco and France; he married Ghislaine Dommanget in 1946 and, when he died in 1949, was succeeded by his grandson Rainier III. He is buried in the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Monte‑Carlo.
