Prince Ludwig August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was a prince of the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha-Koháry dynasty whose career combined naval service with dynastic ties to the Brazilian Empire. Trained in the Austro-Hungarian navy, he took part in the Second Schleswig War (1864) and received decorations for services to the Austrian Empire and to Prussia. He married Princess Leopoldina, daughter of Emperor Dom Pedro II, in 1864 and was appointed an admiral in the Imperial Brazilian Navy, participating in the military effort during the Paraguayan War.
His personal life reflected the complex European networks of the nineteenth century: a grandson of monarchs and cousin to several royal houses, he lived in France, Belgium, Austria and Germany. After Leopoldina’s death in 1871 he settled in Austria and devoted himself to hunting, which became his principal private pursuit.
His later years were marked by family tragedies and by political changes that affected his sphere of influence — notably the fall of the Brazilian monarchy and mental health problems suffered by his son. He died in 1907, leaving a legacy tied both to naval service and to dynastic connections between Europe and Brazil.
