Pyke Koch (Pieter Frans Christiaan Koch) was a self-taught Dutch painter associated with magical realism, a movement in which seemingly realistic scenes take on an uncanny or disturbing tone. His work is notable for technical virtuosity and meticulous detail, with visible references to the Italian Renaissance—particularly Piero della Francesca—and affinities with modern artists such as de Chirico and Magritte. Koch gained recognition in the 1920s and 1930s, with works acquired by major museums and shown in prestigious exhibitions. He also produced graphic design, including stamps and urban projects, and his studio in Utrecht became a meeting place for writers and artists of the period. On a personal level, his ties to authoritarian political currents in the 1930s—membership in a movement sympathetic to fascism and the appearance of his work in allied publications—left a lasting mark on his reputation, although he broke with the group when it allied itself with the Dutch Nazi party. A perfectionist, he destroyed many works he deemed imperfect, leaving a relatively small surviving oeuvre; his paintings remain in the principal collections of the Netherlands. In his final years he suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and withdrew from public life.
