Estefânia of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen was Queen Consort of Portugal and the Algarves as the wife of King Pedro V, holding the position from 1858 until her death in 1859. Born a princess of the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, she was educated in a religious environment, with a strong interest in the arts and language skills, notably fluent in French and familiar with Italian and English.
While young in Düsseldorf, Estefânia pursued artistic studies at the local Academy of Fine Arts and engaged in charitable work, visiting the sick and aiding the needy, which earned her popular affection. Her marriage to Pedro V was treated as a matter of state in Europe, involving notable heads of royal houses, and was formally celebrated in Lisbon in 1858.
The brief married life, characterized by mutual affection and public admiration, ended tragically when Estefânia died of diphtheria at age 22. Her death prompted deep national mourning in Portugal and had a profound emotional effect on the king. Although her time on the throne was short, her religious devotion, philanthropy, and appreciation of the arts are the main aspects of her legacy in the public memory.
