Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen was queen consort of the United Kingdom and of Hanover as the wife of William IV, serving in a public role from 1830 to 1837. Born at the small, relatively liberal court of Saxe-Meiningen, she came to England as a practical dynastic match for the royal family in a marriage marked by an age difference and by the imperative to secure the succession. At the king’s side, Adelaide became known for her reserved, devout, and charitable conduct; she favored a simple domestic life and maintained strict standards of court decorum, which won her widespread popular esteem. She endured several reproductive tragedies and left no surviving heirs, a circumstance that helped shape the line of succession that led to the young Victoria. During the reign she took part in official ceremonies with dignity and received the use of royal residences, directing much of her income to charitable causes. Her name was given lasting geographic recognition: the city of Adelaide in South Australia was named in her honor. Her public legacy is that of a moderate consort, influential through moral example and philanthropic work.
