Randy Johnson is a former American pitcher regarded as one of the most dominant in Major League Baseball during the 1990s and 2000s. Nicknamed “The Big Unit,” he was known for a blazing fastball, often near 100 mph, paired with a sharp slider that became his trademark. His imposing stature and pitch repertoire intimidated opposing hitters throughout a 22-season career.
Among his most notable achievements is the perfect game he threw on May 18, 2004, for the Arizona Diamondbacks; at age 40 he became the oldest pitcher to record a perfect game in league history. Over his career he collected major individual honors: five Cy Young Awards, led the league in strikeouts nine seasons, and led in ERA four times. He was also a ten-time All-Star.
Johnson retired in 2010 with 303 wins, 4,875 strikeouts, and a record that places him among the greatest pitchers of the modern era, influencing later generations with a blend of power, craft, and longevity.
