Randy Van Horne (Harry Randell Van Horne Jr.) was an American singer, arranger and vocal group leader, active mainly from the 1950s through the 1970s. He formed the Randy Van Horne Singers, a studio ensemble known for its smooth vocal style and commercial recordings; several members went on to notable solo careers. The group became known for recording themes for Hanna-Barbera cartoons — including The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Top Cat and The Huckleberry Hound Show — at the invitation of composer Hoyt Curtin. Besides those themes, the ensemble produced albums and advertising jingles, and collaborated with artists such as bandleader Juan García Esquivel. After the group’s initial breakup in the early 1970s, Van Horne remained musically active in Los Angeles clubs, led the Alumni Association (bringing together musicians from the big-band era) and composed works such as the symphonic suite The Running of the Bulls, premiered in 1981. He later reformed the group after 2000, with leadership passing to Alan Wilson. Van Horne also worked as a studio singer and arranger and is remembered chiefly for the influence of his vocal arrangements on television soundtracks and commercial music of the 1950s and ’60s.
