Raymond Buckland was an author and influential leader in the Anglo-American Wiccan movement, known for popularizing contemporary witchcraft practices and for founding Seax-Wica, a Saxon-inspired tradition aimed at solitary and self-initiated practitioners. Initiated by Gerald Gardner, Buckland adapted the heritage of European witchcraft to the United States, combining anthropological study and an interest in the occult into didactic, accessible works.
Over several decades he published books and videos — including widely distributed titles on ritual, spirit communication, divination, and practical magic — which served as reference for generations of neopagans. He also spoke at neopagan events such as the Starwood Festival, contributing to public discussion and the movement’s visibility.
After moving to the U.S. in 1962, he built a career as a researcher and popularizer, later running a private museum and maintaining a solitary practice until retiring from public activities in 1992. His legacy endures in contemporary Wiccan traditions and literature.
