Raymond Poincaré was a French lawyer and statesman who became one of the leading figures of the Third Republic. He held several ministerial posts while still young, including Public Instruction and Finance, building a reputation as a moderate republican, a defender of secular public education, and a conciliatory presence in party politics. His parliamentary career began as a deputy for Meuse and continued in the Senate, where he became known for the quality of his speeches and his work on the Finance Committee. He became President of the Council before being elected President of the Republic (1913–1920). As head of state during the First World War, Poincaré was a central figure in the Union Sacrée, cooperating with leaders such as René Viviani, Aristide Briand and Georges Clemenceau, and he played a decisive role in the country’s political and military decisions. He supported measures such as extending military service and sought to reconcile domestic pressures with the demands of national defense. After his presidential term he returned to lead the government in two periods (1922–1924 and 1926–1929), remaining influential on financial and foreign affairs. Recognized for his classical education and his ties to the intellectual world (he was elected to the Académie française in 1909), he left a legacy as a strict administrator and a central actor in French politics during one of the most turbulent periods of the early twentieth century.
