Christian VIII (Christian Frederik) was King of Denmark from 1839 to 1848 and played a central role in the events involving Norway in 1814. A member of the House of Oldenburg, he became heir presumptive when King Frederick VI left no male descendants. Throughout his life he held prominent public offices, including the post of governor (statholder) in Norway in 1813, where he sought to strengthen Norwegians’ ties to the Danish dynasty amid the continental crisis and Napoleon’s fall. In 1814 he led Norwegian resistance to the cession envisaged by the Treaty of Kiel, was elected regent and then King of Norway by the Assembly at Eidsvoll, which promulgated the constitution of 17 May. Frustrated negotiations with Sweden and the short subsequent military campaign ended with the Convention of Moss, his abdication, and his return to Denmark. As King of Denmark from 1839, Christian VIII adopted a traditional, conservative stance, continuing to pursue the arts and sciences—interests he had cultivated since childhood—and preserved the dynastic position during a period of European tensions. His legacy includes the brief constitutional impulse in Norway in 1814 and the maintenance of dynastic stability in Denmark until his death.
