Charles V of France, known as the Wise, was king from 1364 until 1380 and is notable as a statesman who restored the monarchy after the crisis of the Hundred Years’ War. The son of John II, he assumed the regency at a very young age during his father’s captivity and confronted internal revolts, financial crises, and the political trauma caused by the defeat at Poitiers. His administrative and strategic skill consolidated his reputation.
On the military front, he adopted war‑of‑attrition tactics and mobilized commanders such as Bertrand du Guesclin and Olivier de Clisson, recovering much of the territory ceded to the English by the Treaty of Brétigny. His policy of employing and redirecting mercenary companies helped restore order and weaken English support on the continent.
A patron of the arts and letters, he established the first royal library of France and hosted cultural figures at his court. During his reign, enduring dynastic symbols were also defined, such as the three golden fleurs‑de‑lis on blue. His legacy combines territorial recovery, administrative reform, and cultural encouragement at a critical phase of French history.
