Charles VIII, known as Charles the Affable, reigned in France from 1483 until his death in 1498. The only son of Louis XI, he ascended the throne as a teenager and early on faced internal challenges such as resistance from Brittany, a matter resolved politically by his marriage to Anne of Brittany—a decisive move that helped bring the duchy into the French realm. On the foreign front, Charles VIII pursued dynastic claims to the Kingdom of Naples and mounted an Italian campaign that, in the short term, succeeded in capturing several positions on the peninsula. His entry into Rome and the capture of Naples in 1495, however, prompted the formation of a European coalition that expelled the French forces and launched the prolonged Italian Wars, a defining factor in relations among European powers for decades to come. A patron and carrier of Italian works, Charles helped introduce elements of the Renaissance to the French court. He died unexpectedly in 1498 after a domestic accident, leaving no surviving heirs; the crown passed to Louis XII and the direct Valois line came to an end.
