Louis XII (1462–1515) was King of France from 1498 until his death, a member of the Valois–Orléans branch. He succeeded to the throne after Charles VIII died without heirs and made consolidating royal authority and the administrative centralization inherited from his predecessors a priority. He is remembered for fiscal reforms (1504, 1508) that systematized tax collection and strengthened the royal treasury.
On the dynastic and territorial front, he secured the annexation of Brittany by marrying Anne of Brittany in 1499, ensuring the duchy’s integration into the crown’s domain. His marital policy also sought to safeguard the succession, marrying his daughter Claude to the future Francis I.
In foreign policy, he pursued ambitions in Italy: he captured Milan in 1499 and took part in several campaigns there, with a mix of victories and defeats — including the loss of Naples and parts of Lombardy from 1503 onward. These expeditions were part of the complex European rivalries that involved France, Spain, the Papacy, and the Italian powers.
Despite military setbacks, Louis XII enjoyed domestic popularity and was styled “Father of the People” by the Estates General in 1506. His reign left a mixed legacy: gains in financial administration and territorial consolidation, alongside prolonged conflicts in Italy that shaped early sixteenth‑century French foreign policy.
