Vittorio Amedeo III (Vittorio Amedeo Maria di Savoia) was King of Sardinia from 1773 to 1796, a reign marked by military reforms and the upheavals caused by the French Revolution. Heir of Charles Emmanuel III and Polyxena of Hesse‑Rotenburg, he devoted himself to reorganizing the army along Prussian lines and founded the Turin Academy of Sciences, showing interest both in strengthening the armed forces and in promoting intellectual life. On the international stage, he sought to maintain alliances with traditional monarchies and hosted numerous French émigrés, among them the Count of Artois, while attempting to contain revolutionary agitation. Foreign policy and military setbacks ultimately weakened the kingdom: in 1792 he lost Savoy and Nice to French troops, and in 1796 he was forced to accept damaging terms in the Armistice of Cherasco and the Treaty of Paris, which involved territorial concessions and a French military presence in Piedmont. Privately conservative and deeply religious, Vittorio Amedeo was regarded as generous and reserved. He married the Spanish infanta María Antonia of Bourbon, a union that produced numerous children, including future sovereigns Charles Emmanuel IV and Victor Emmanuel I, leaving a dynastic and institutional legacy characterized by efforts to modernize the military and by attempts to resist the revolutionary changes sweeping Europe.
