Alexander I of Serbia (Aleksandar Obrenović) was the last king of the Obrenović dynasty, reigning from 1889 to 1903. He ascended the throne as a teenager after his father Milan I abdicated, and in his early years a regency served as the political instrument while he sought to consolidate his own authority. When he assumed full power he enacted constitutional changes and tried to balance internal political forces, alternating liberalizing measures with authoritarian acts. His reign was marked by tensions with the Radical Party and by growing discontent within the armed forces and public opinion over the country’s foreign alignments—particularly Austrian influence—and by dynastic controversies. Marriages rejected by foreign princesses and his unpopular marriage to Draga Mašin worsened his political vulnerability, fueling intrigue and the court’s isolation. Seeking to secure the succession, Alexander promoted institutional reforms, but his attempts to name heirs and to control the senate provoked opposition. A mix of personal unpopularity, arbitrary decisions and military conspiracies culminated in his overthrow and death in 1903, ending the Obrenović line and paving the way for the rival family’s rise.
