Charles XII (Karl XII) was King of Sweden from 1697 to 1718, known as Carolus Rex and nicknamed the “Alexander of the North.” Heir to the Palatinate‑Zweibrücken dynasty, he took the throne at fifteen and established an absolute monarchy, notable for a strict military upbringing and remarkable strategic skill. His reign was defined by the Great Northern War (1700–1721), in which Sweden faced a coalition of Denmark‑Norway, Saxony‑Poland and Russia. Charles won brilliant victories, such as at Narva (1700), but the invasion of Russia culminated in the disastrous campaign at Poltava (1709) and the king’s temporary exile in the Ottoman Empire. Returning to Europe, he resumed fighting the northern powers, ending his military career with the campaign against Norway, during which he died while besieging Fredriksten (1718). His death hastened the end of Swedish expansionism and facilitated Russia’s rise as a great power. Charles XII’s legacy remains ambiguous: admired for his courage and military discipline, he is also associated with the kingdom’s human and financial exhaustion, whose defeat reshaped the Baltic geopolitical order and opened the way for institutional changes in Sweden.
