Oscar I, born Joseph François Oscar Bernadotte, was King of Sweden and Norway from 1844 to 1859, serving as the second monarch of the Bernadotte dynasty. The son of Jean‑Baptiste Bernadotte, he moved from an upbringing in France to the Swedish court and became heir when integrated into the royal family; he became known for adopting a more liberal political stance than his father’s while remaining cautious in character.
During his reign he promoted social and institutional reforms: he established freedom of the press, advanced succession equality among siblings in 1845, and supported reforms in education and the penitentiary system. His literary and musical works, such as completing the opera Ryno and writing on education and punishment, reflect his interest in cultural and social matters.
In foreign policy he favored the principle of nationality, supported Denmark during the Schleswig wars and acted as a mediator in regional conflicts; in 1855 he also formed an alliance with the United Kingdom and France to protect the territorial integrity of Sweden–Norway. His health declined in the 1850s, culminating in paralysis in 1857 and his death in 1859. Oscar I’s legacy lies in his moderate reformism and his efforts to strengthen equality and the material prosperity of the realms.
