Mohammed VI is the current King of Morocco and a member of the Alaouite dynasty, occupying the throne since 1999. Trained in law, with a doctorate on relations between the European Community and the Maghreb, he had held public and military positions since youth and pledged to fight poverty, unemployment and corruption upon his coronation. In the early years of his reign he introduced social and legal reforms, notably changes to the family code that expanded women’s rights. In 2011, in response to protests associated with the Arab Spring, he promoted constitutional changes that were submitted to a referendum, along with measures aimed at economic modernization and strengthening the armed forces. In cultural and religious matters, he backed promotion of Berber identity as a national component — officially recognizing the Amazigh language — and advocated a non-sectarian Islam, seeking to curb the spread of extremist currents. In foreign policy, he maintained the country’s moderate course, deepening ties with the United States, the European Union, China and African countries, and pursuing international recognition regarding Western Sahara. His role is also notable for extensive business interests within the country; public figures and investigative journalism have raised questions about corruption and influence over the state apparatus, topics that remain sensitive in public debate.
