Henry of Portugal (1512–1580), nicknamed “the Chaste” and “the Cardinal‑King,” was a central figure in both the monarchy and the Church in mid‑sixteenth‑century Portugal. A son of Manuel I, he pursued an early ecclesiastical career, accumulating important offices: archbishop of Braga, Évora and Lisbon, inquisitor‑general, and cardinal from 1545. As an influential cleric he promoted the entry of the Jesuits into the kingdom and took an active part in papal conclaves, even being mentioned among the papal candidates in 1555. From 1562 to 1568 he served as regent during the minority of Sebastian, managing state affairs in a period marked by overseas expansion and tensions with Spain. After Sebastian’s defeat and death at Alcácer‑Quibir (1578), Henry assumed the crown, renouncing the full exercise of clerical functions in an attempt to secure dynastic continuity, but he did not obtain papal dispensation to marry. His short reign was dominated by the succession crisis; Henry refused to recognize António, Prior of Crato, as heir, and on his death in 1580 he left the country vulnerable to the claim of Philip II of Spain, who established the dynastic union. He was buried at the Jerónimos Monastery, leaving an ambiguous legacy as a religious shepherd and as the last king of the direct House of Aviz.
