René Lévesque was a central figure in 20th‑century Quebec politics, combining a journalistic career with party and governmental leadership. A former reporter and radio and television host, Lévesque entered politics as a minister in Jean Lesage’s Liberal government (1960–1966) and later founded the Parti Québécois, through which he publicly advocated Quebec sovereignty. He led the provincial government as premier from 1976 to 1985, a period in which he prioritized nationalization and control of natural resources, notably mobilizing around hydroelectric power to strengthen the province’s economy and economic identity. His leadership culminated in calling a referendum on independence, making him the first Quebec leader since Confederation to put that proposal to a vote. Author of several works on the Quebec political project, Lévesque also received international honors, including appointment as a Grand Officer of the French Légion d’honneur. His legacy remains debated: he is remembered both for economic modernization and for reinforcing Quebec’s national profile, and for his controversial role in the sovereignty debates.
