Richard Norman Anderson was an American film and television actor whose career ran from the early 1950s into the closing decades of the 20th century. He began as a contract player for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, appearing in films such as Forbidden Planet (1956) and Paths of Glory (1957), and also worked for 20th Century Fox, establishing himself in character roles and authority figures. In television he became especially known as Oscar Goldman, the superior of Steve Austin and Jaime Sommers on The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman, a role he played between 1973 and 1978 and in subsequent television films. Over the course of his career he made numerous appearances on classic series—among them Perry Mason (where he was a regular in the final season), The Fugitive, The Wild Wild West, Bonanza and Columbo—demonstrating versatility across dramas, westerns and action series. In addition to acting, he was a frequent narrator and spokesman in television projects and commercials, notably serving as the “Shell Answer Man” in Shell advertisements from 1976 to 1982. Honored for his long career, he received recognition such as a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars in 2007, leaving a legacy as a vital supporting actor for postwar American television and cinema.
