Richard Allen was a leading African‑American religious leader and the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, the first independent Black Methodist denomination in the United States. Born into slavery and converted to Methodism in 1777, he bought his freedom and became known as a preacher, drawing large numbers of Black worshipers in Philadelphia. In response to religious segregation, he helped establish the Free African Society and, in 1794, helped found Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, a landmark of Black religious independence.
In 1799 he was ordained a deacon and later became the first Black bishop in the U.S., a role in which he promoted institutional organization, produced a denominational hymnal (1818), and oversaw the rapid expansion of the AME across the North and Midwest. During the yellow fever epidemic of 1793, his community provided essential services, reinforcing claims for moral and civic equality.
Allen was also active as an activist: he condemned slavery, opposed efforts to remove free Black people from the region, and supported education and religious instruction as paths to emancipation. He founded charitable and educational societies, published abolitionist writings, and encouraged the use of goods not produced by slave labor. His legacy endures in the institutional and social presence of the AME Church and in the tradition of organized Black leadership in the United States.
