Richard E. Cavazos was a senior officer in the United States Army whose 33‑year military career reached several historic milestones. A veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross twice for leadership and courage in combat; the decoration for his actions in Korea was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor. Cavazos also received the Silver Star for combat in Korea.

As a commander, he led significant units, including the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division, and the 9th Infantry Division. In 1976 he became the first Hispanic to attain the rank of brigadier general in the U.S. Army; in 1982 he made history again when he was promoted to four‑star general and took command of United States Army Forces Command.

Beyond his military distinction, Cavazos helped improve Army training by supporting the National Training Center and the Battle Command Training Program. After retiring, he served on federal commissions and in academic bodies. His legacy was also recognized by renaming a major military installation in his honor.
