Richard von Krafft-Ebing was a German-Austrian psychiatrist whose work influenced forensic medicine and the historiography of sexuality in the late nineteenth century. A university professor, he became best known for Psychopathia Sexualis (1886), a clinical-forensic book that compiled hundreds of cases and introduced terms such as sadism, masochism, fetishism, homosexuality, and bisexuality into medical and legal debate. Krafft-Ebing’s approach combined clinical reports and legal reflection, arguing that the mental state of defendants should be considered in trials for sexual offenses; for this reason his book had wide influence on the courts, psychiatrists, and jurists of his time. His classifications — such as the so-called “cerebral neuroses” — and his moralizing view of sexuality, which framed procreation as the natural end of desire, reflect the scientific limits and assumptions of the period. Nevertheless, his work remained a reference into the twentieth century and influenced subsequent generations of researchers, although many of his conclusions were later superseded by developments in psychiatry and the social sciences.
