Richard Charles Rodgers was a leading American composer in 20th-century musical theatre, credited with 43 Broadway musicals and more than 900 songs. He became famous for his partnerships with lyricists Lorenz Hart and, later, Oscar Hammerstein II; with them he created works that transformed musical theatre by integrating plot, character and song. With Hart, Rodgers produced hits of the 1920s and 1930s such as Pal Joey, On Your Toes and Babes in Arms, generating enduring standards like "My Funny Valentine" and "The Lady Is a Tramp." With Hammerstein, in the 1940s and 1950s, he co-wrote landmark shows including Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music—works that helped raise Broadway’s dramatic maturity. Recognized for both his prolific output and stylistic influence, Rodgers was the first person to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony (EGOT) and also received a Pulitzer Prize, reflecting distinction across theatre, film, recording and television. In 1978 he was among the inaugural honorees of the Kennedy Center for his artistic career. His legacy endures in scores and songs that remain in the repertoire and in the establishment of the integrated musical as a dramatic form followed by subsequent generations.
